Known for its remarkable durability, salt tolerance, and ability to withstand fluctuating weather, the Sabal Palm is a trusted choice of Palms for Coastal North Carolina landscapes (Zone 8a–8b). It brings instant coastal charm, supports local ecosystems, and thrives in the sandy, windy conditions common throughout eastern NC. It's a top favorite tree request with our local landscape companies and our homeowners!

About the Sabal Palm
The Sabal Palm is a slow-growing, fan-leaf palm native to the southeastern United States. With its stout trunk, crown of large fan-shaped fronds, and ability to live for decades, it’s considered one of the hardiest true palms available. It's trunk can come booted (with spikes) or slick (smooth surface). Newly transported Sabal Palms are 'hurricane cut' & are regenerated the garden center through our plant care program. Mature Sabal Palms can reach 40–50+ feet in ideal conditions, though growth is gradual, making it a manageable option for residential and commercial landscapes.

Common Sabal Palm Tree Questions (FAQ)
Q: Why are the leaves browning? A: This can be caused by transplant shock, overwatering, underwatering, or cold stress. Check soil drainage and recent temperature dips.
Q: How long does it take for new fronds to emerge? A: Sabal Palms push new fronds slowly, especially during the first 1–2 years after planting. In warm months, expect 2–4 new fronds to start per growing season. Cooler winters may pause growth entirely until temperatures rise again.
Q: Are Sabal Palms salt tolerant? A: Sabal Palms are highly salt tolerant and ideal for coastal, windy environments.
Q: How heavy is an 8 ft Sabal Palm? A: An 8-ft Sabal Palm is extremely heavy. Depending on the trunk size, root ball, and soil moisture, it can weigh several hundred pounds. We strongly recommend professional installation using proper heavy equipment and a trained team. This ensures safe handling, correct planting depth, and prevents injury or damage to the tree (or you!). Learn more about our Delivery + Installation services!
